We originally travelled the Indian subcontinent in 1991, without the aid of a mobile ‘phone or Sat Nav, but with a trusty, soon to be battered, copy of the Lonely Planet Guide. Travel hotspots, train timetables and accommodation choices relied upon fellow backpackers and incredibly engaging locals. Poste Restante, courtesy of AMEX, was the only way to keep up with news from home. We eventually returned to Kerala over 30 years later.
